Report of the Weekly Luncheon Meeting held February 23, 2012

Today's meeting was held at Riverside Country Club. President Steve Densley conducted. Ron Roberts played dinner music and accompanied the singing of the Anthem. Jill Moon lead the singing and the Pledge. Dan Ellertson offered an invocation.
Jim Calder introduced his wife Ann who is visiting today.
President Steve Densley commented on the menu for today's buffet -- Mardi Gras food in honor of that event this week: jumbalaya, steamed okra, fried catfish, chard, etc.

Andy Anderson distributed free tickets to the final UVU home basketball game noting that this championship team has won their last eleven games.
President Steve Densley noted some changes to the Rotary District 5420 (Utah) Manual of Procedures and asked club members to approve them. They did.

Jim Calder introduced today's speaker, Clark Gilbert, President and CEO of Deseret News Publishing Company and Deseret Digital Media. Clark is the son of Paul and Susal Gilbert, and Jim noted with some pride that he is married to his daughter Kathryn and is the father of seven of Jim and Ann's grandchildren.

Clark was a Harvard University professor for many years then Executive Vice-President of BYU Idaho before moving to his present assignment.

He also spoke about the spectacular growth of the Deseret News print editions, a trend that is the opposite of most print newspapers. The Deseret News has recently launched a national edition which will be distributed in many large metro areas around the US.

Today's meeting was held at Riverside Country Club. President Steve Densley conducted. Ron Roberts played dinner music and accompanied the singing of the Anthem. Ann Calder lead the singing and the Pledge. Vic Ludlow offered an invocation.

President Steve Densley announced that Rick Hood has accepted a new club position as member retention specialist.

Paul Warner reported that Monty Groesbeck recently broke his hip.

Tom Powell served as sergeant asking questions about Steve Densley's column which appeared in today's Daily Herald.

Jim Calder introduced today's speaker, President Gordon D. Brown of the Provo Missionary Training Center (MTC) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dr. Brown is a physician and former president of the LDS Illinois Chicago Mission. It was noted that one of his first Church callings was as a branch president of a Coast Guard ship in Viet Nam.

First President Brown showed excerpts of a new video shown to incoming missionaries called "The First Two Days" which tells new missionaries what to expect as they become acquainted with life at the MTC. The MTC is its own self-contained world with a US Post Office, book store, laundry, medical facilities, food services, and much more. Fifty-two languages are taught with Turkish being the newest. There are 950 teachers, mostly BYU students. More than 2.6 million meals are served annually.

Although the MTC in Provo is the largest, training approximately 72% (21,000 in 2011) of the world's 56,000+ full-time missionaries, There are fourteen other MTCs around the world. The second-largest is in Brazil with 600 beds, the third is in Peru with 120 beds.

The Provo MTC is four years into a ten-year building program. There will be many large building projects beginning soon.

The number of full-time missionaries is increasing. It is up 5% just in the last year. There has been a 22% increase in young women missionaries and a 35% increase in senior couple missionaries. There are currently 340 missions in 165 countries worldwide.

President Brown noted that 70% of BYU's students speak at least two languages.

Doris Bullock comes to substitute in playing our dinner music whenever Ron Roberts is away. She was there today. She won't accept payment always indicating that we should put her pay into our charity to help do more good. Today President Steve Densley awarded her with a tax-deductible donation receipt from the Provo Rotary Charitable Foundation indicating her donations.

Quent Bates inducted Scott Kirkland as a new member of the club. Scott is the General Manager of Riverside Country Club. Welcome Scott!

Jim Calder introduced Matt Connor, CPA, Senior Manager at the Salt Lake City based forensic accounting firm Rocky Mountain Advisory, who spoke about the expansion of affinity fraud in Utah. In the past five years his firm has investigated more than $500 million in fraud involving more than 2,000 victims. He shared several of those stories.

He gave several characteristics of a Ponzi scheme. Many start out as legitimate business that get in financial trouble and turn to fraudulent practices to keep the doors open.

.never becomes profitable

.begins deceiving investors with intent

.new investors funds are used to repay older investors

.a business promises extraordinary rates of return (i.e. 5% to 10% per month)

In Utah occasionally church associations are used to lure investors because of trust of one's fellow church members/neighbors.

In closing Mr. Connors quoted Ronald Reagan: Trust but verify.

As is customary, President Steve Densley distributed door prizes a the end of the meeting.

Dr. Vic Ludlow introduced today speaker, President Cecil O. Samuelson, MD of BYU. President Samuelson has served as BYU president for nine years and quipped that when he was assigned to this position President Gordon B. Hinckley (LDS Church) told him not to sell his home in Salt Lake because this BYU assignment wouldn't last long. Well, President Hickley isn't there any more...

He said this is a nice season of time for BYU. Several new buildings have either recently been completed or are in some stage of construction:

New Heritage Halls apartments replace the former Deseret Towers (circa 1964)

Heritage Halls (circa 1956) are gradually being removed and will be replaced

A new life sciences is under construction with 250 car underground parking

New utility towers now cover the campus

A new broadcast building was recently completed

A new engineering building is planned

BYU will continue its mission as primarily an undergraduate university. Because of high demand, minimum entrance requirements continue to climb. Many current faculty members admit they probably wouldn't qualify for admission under today's standards.

BYU is known for being among the top ten universities in the country whose students go on to earn doctoral degrees.

BYU produces more dentists than any other US university.

The mission of the BYU Bookstore is changing dramatically. It has been operating under a non-sustainable model for several years. Students now purchase textbooks on the Internet or as e-books.

BYU will not be making new parking lots. In fact there is an active effort to keep cars off campus. With only 550 acres of space, there is no room to expand parking. Students are encouraged to live within walking distance of campus or to use public transportation.

BYU's recent athletic affiliation with the West Coast Conference was not an accident. BYU is more academically aligned with the schools in the WCC than with any other NCAA conference. The average ACT scores of new freshment in the WCC is 28+. BYU's current requirement for admission is a minimum ACT score of 28. All but two schools in the WCC are religiously affiliated.

Despite the high profile of BYU athletic teams, President Samuelson emphasized that the athletic programs only exists to support the University's undergraduate academic mission.

President Steve Densley read several thank you notes from Provo 3rd-grade students thanking our club for their dictionaries.

Vic Ludlow introduced several people from the Hale Center Theater of Orem (HCTO) who gave an intertaining and informative program. Jim Murphy, former Provo Rotarian, is president of the HCTO Foundation for the ARts and Education. He reported that HCTO has been voted the best live theater in Utah Valley for the past ten years. They hope to build a new theater to replace the remodeled reception center they now occupy at 4th North and Orem Boulevard. They had plans nearly four years ago to build in the now defunct Midtown Village and would still consider such a move if that project ever gets revived. Their current effort is to replace their seats with some similar to those in the LDS Conference Center. For a donation of $300 anyone can purchase a seat and have an engraved name plate with their name on the chair's arm.

Cody Swenson

Cody Swenson is grandson of Ruth and Nathan Hale who founded the theater. He gave a brief history of the theater's origin in Glendale, CA. HCTO was opened in 1990 and there are now theaters in West Valley City, Gilbert, AZ and Grover Utah (summers only).

Ann Swenson

Ann Swenson reported that HCTO has an average of attendance of 95% for all shows. They perform many region premiers of plays from Broadway along with audience favorites. They own a huge costume collection. Rentals of costumes almost pay the entire costume budget for the plays. HCTO employs only local actors and directors. Their lighting, stage and online ticket sales are all computerized.

David Smith

David Smith spoke about HCTO's education program which has a separate studio for vocal and acting students. They teach singing of show tunes in addition to classical styles of singing. The theater offers daytime performances of some shows for local school children to attend.

Scott Miller reported that the Utah Valley United Way provided Christmas for 5,000 people. Twenty-five of those Christmases were provided by members of the Provo Rotary Club.

Andy Anderson is recovering from surgery and was in attendance today.

Steve Gleason

Vic Ludlow introduced Steve Gleason, General Manager of the Provo Municipal Airport for the past twelve years. He gave some interesting information about it.

With more than 175,000 operations (take-offs and landings) per year it is the 2nd busiest airport in Utah. Many charter operations including the BYU football charters have been using the Provo airport for more than ten years.

The airport got a control tower completed in 2005 at a cost of $2.5 million. Radar service was added in September 2011 for the first time.

Jill Moon and Strat Wendelboe

Fixed-base operator Million Air, owned by fellow Provo Rotarian Larry Mendenhall, operates the airport's newest facility, a TSA operated secure terminal which hosts daily round-trip flights from Provo to Denver by Frontier Airlines. This daily service began June 21, 2011. It began with 35-40% of capacity and now averages 80% full flights. In 2011 more than 15,000 commercial customers flew in and out of the Provo airport. More flights are expected to be added in the near future. When there are three regularly scheduled commercial flights daily Provo will build a dedicated terminal.

Mario Markides

Steve Gleason introduced Mario Markides who operates the UVU flight school, the largest flight training operation in the Western US and third-largest in the US, with currently 2,500 students.

After the presentations Rotarians were given a tour of the new TSA passenter flight operations building.

Today's luncheon meeting was held at Riverside Country Club dinner music directed by Jill Moon and singing accompanyment provided by Ron Roberts. President Steve Densley conducted. An invocation was offered by Vic Ludlow.

Rick Gregory introduced his guest, Captain Matt Siafanua of the Provo Police Department. Don Jarvis introduced two guests -- his wife Janelle and Gary McGinn, Communications Director for Provo City. Ethan Shumway introduced his guest from the Utah Valley Health Care Foundation. Paul Warner introduced Ev Richards with Utah Studies Weekly. Michelle Dudleenamjil was visiting as was Blake Romney with Provo Channel 17.

Birthdays were celebrated for Provo Rotarians with December birthdays: Alan Blom, Jim Calder, Lee Gallagher, Monty Groesbeck, Larry Mendenhall, and Ron Pugh.

Distribution of dictionaries to all third-grade students in the Provo School District is nearly complete. These dictionaries are an annual gift from the Provo Rotary Club. This year we will distribute close to 1,200.

President Steve Densley reminded everyone of the annual club Christmas party a week from today, Thursday, December 15 at Riverside Country Club. All Rotarians and a guest are invited at no charge. Additional guests will be charged $50 each.

Scott Miller spoke again of the club's annual Sub-for-Santa project in cooperation with the United Way of Utah Valley. All Rotarians are invited to adopt a low-income child or special-needs adult to provide a little Christmas cheer.

It was announced that Andy Anderson is recovering well from brain surgery last month. He is in St. George recuperating and undergoing speech therapy. He hopes to rejoin us in January.

Don Jarvis introduced today's speaker, David Hall of Novatek, a world leader in drilling technology. He spoke about pet project he has called NewVistas, a cooperative planned community in which residents will become part of a communal way of life in a self-contained neighborhood where people will live, work, and worship without the need to leave the community. The first experimental project is planned for unused property in south Provo. For more information go to www.newvistas.com.

Pioneer in leadership: Former BYU football coach honored

Life isn't about football games or victories but about relationships, former BYU football coach LaVell Edwards said after being honored by the BYU Management Society Utah Valley Chapter during the fourth annual Pioneer in Leadership Award Gala on Nov. 18.

"Looking back over the experiences I have had over the years ... we have had a lot of great events, and a lot of great times in our lives," Brother Edwards said. "But, rarely do I ever think about games — I often think about relationships. That has always been the most important part of whatever we do in life."
During the gala dinner, held in the Provo Marriott Hotel, organizers lauded Brother Edwards for his pioneer spirit of courage in adversity and integrity in leadership.

     "The Pioneer in Leadership award is given not to people who cross the plains … but to people who have done a little extra, achieved a little more and perhaps have done things a little different," said Brad Mertz, president of the BYU Management Society Utah Valley Chapter. "Although I didn't have the privilege of playing football for Coach Edwards, he is my coach, and I believe he has been your coach …through [his] example of integrity, hard work and willingness to be and do things different."
     Although Brother Edwards is well known nationally in the athletic world for his 29-year run as head coach of the BYU football team, it is his high morals and integrity seen in his associations with others both on and off the field that makes him stand out.
     "LaVell is a man of God," the program for the event noted. "He has served in a wide variety of callings for the Church. ... He has made the difference in hundreds of people's lives. He lives what he believes."
     During the event, Chad Lewis, who works in the BYU Athletics Department and is a former player for Brother Edwards, read some comments from other players about their former coach.
     He quoted one player as saying, "The personal relationship with the players meant more than the game of football. He cared more about you, your wife, your family, as much as how you were doing on the field."
     Another player said, "His aura always made me want to be better. When he came into the football office, we all wanted to sit up straighter. When he walked into the room even the hard-nosed guys gave him total respect."
     Brother Lewis told a story about Tom Holmoe, athletic director for BYU, and his experience of coming to play football for Brother Edwards at BYU.? During a fall practice as a freshman, Brother Holmoe — who was then not a member of the Church — was having a rough time and so his father came to campus for a visit.
     As Brother Holmoe's dad sat just inside the gate of the field to watch the practice, Brother Edwards walked up to him and called him by name. He then proceeded to spend the next 45 minutes speaking with the player's father.
     After the practice, Brother Holmoe remembered his father telling him, "Tom, you aren't going anywhere. With a man like that, you are in good hands."
     For many, Brother Edwards taught them the importance of being more than a football player, Brother Lewis said.
     "As coach Edwards speaks of the players he coaches, he recognizes these players accomplishments, and their greatest achievements as they should be recognized," Brother Mertz said. "I've heard him say many times that these men are good husbands, they're good fathers, they are good men."

Gary Herbert said, "I applaud you not only for your success … as head coach at BYU, but for the example you set as a moral and ethical leader in both your profssional and private life. You have demonstrated dedication to others and service to your fellow man. Throughout the years you have been pulled in many directions, however, you have always let it be known, that Patti and your children have been, and always will be your highest priority."
     Over the span of his coaching career Brother Edwards has been recognized with many awards and accomplishments, but it is his ability to build relationships that his associates remember the most.
     "He is recognized throughout the U.S.," said Michael Jacobsen, a former player and director of athletics and associate vice president at Utah Valley University. "People know who he is and what he stands for. He has left a legacy and great example. People know him today for what he represents, but his legacy goes way beyond that. He is a friend and mentor."
     For Brother Edwards, the relationships he has built over many years are what he still cherishes most.
     "The individual is what counts," Brother Edwards said. "And that's what I thoroughly enjoy above anything else. People have asked me if I miss coaching. I have not missed the duties of the coach, but I have missed the relationships."

Today's luncheon meeting was held at Riverside Country Club dinner music and singing accompanyment provided by Ron Roberts. President Steve Densley conducted. An invocation was offered by Steve Royster.

Quent Bates introduced his guest Scott Kirkland. Scott is general manager of Riverside Country Club and Quent's son-in-law. Greg Hudnall introduced his guest Cathy Bledsoe. Trent Mano of Northwestern Mutual Life was visiting.

Scott Miller distributed information about children in the Provo area who are in need of clothing as part of United Way's annual Sub-for Santa program. If you wish to "adopt" a child this Christmas and provide clothing and other items, please contact Scott.

President Steve Densley spoke about the annual Provo Rotary Christmas Party coming up December 15 and invited Rotarians to sign-up on sheets located on each table. More than fifty people signed-up.

     President Steve Densley recently initiated a donation from the Provo Rotary Charitable Foundation of sixty coats to children in the Provo School District who didn't own a warm coat. Greg Hudnall reported that the coats were recently distributed by the school principals amidst much gratitude and many tears.
     Vic Ludlow reported on plans for club meetings in January. Riverside Country Club will be closed the first two weeks of January so we'll go on a couple of field trips to the Provo Airport and take a tour of the new BYU Broadcasting building. President Cecil O. Samuelson of BYU, a fellow Provo Rotarian, will speak to us later in January.
     Andy Anderson is recovering from surgery earlier this week to correct a brain aneurysm.

    Greg Hudnall served as sergeant recognizing Mike Jacobsen whose photo was in the LDS Church News last weekend with former BYU football coach LaVell Edwards.

Don Jarvis introduced today's speaker Kevin Garlick, Energy Director for Provo City Power (PCP) since 1997. PCP was established in 1940 by vote of the citizens of Provo. Its goals are to provide competitive rates, reliable and safe power, and competent customer service support.

     Recently PCP instituted a conservation program of graduated rates based on the level of energy consumption in a month. Most residential consumers use 600-1,200 KwH per month.
     Using funds received from a recent federal grant, PCP has added bike lanes to many city streets to encourage reduction in use of fossil fuels. Street lights are being changed to high-efficiency LED lights. Red/Yellow/Green stop lights are also being changed to LED lights to reduce energy usage.
     Some Provo residents have installed solar cells on their homes or places of business. Meters are available to measure energy returned to the power grid from solar cells.
     10% of utility bill revenue goes into the Provo City general fund. Last year it was more than $6 million.

Report of the Weekly Luncheon Meeting held November 17, 2011

Today's luncheon meeting was held at Alexander's Digital Printing in Lindon with provided prepared by the Texas Roadhouse Restaurant. President Steve Densley conducted. An invocation was offered by Vic Ludlow.

A sign-up list was circulated for delivering dictionaries to each 3rd-grade student in the Provo School District. The list of schools was incomplete so it will be circulated again at the next meeting.

President Steve Densley awarded a check for $1,000 to Dr. Don Jarvis representing Centro Hispano. The check, from the Provo Rotary Charitable Foundation, will be combined with matching funds and used to purchase shoes for needy school children in Provo.

Jill Moon reminded everyone of the annual club Christmas party coming up on Thursday evening, December 15 at Riverside Country Club. A sign-up sheet will be distributed at the next meeting.

President Steve Densley turned the time over to our host, Jeff Alexander, owner of Alexander's Printing, who gave a fascinating slide show about his business and the unique nitch they have carved for themselves. The business started out in 1979 as a ratail copy center in Provo. They built the current facility in Lindon in 1998 and have spent the past 13-year adapting to the fast-changing technology in the printing industry. He showed several types of products they make including short-run books, individualized reminder cards, full-color business cards, free-standing 3-dimentional display stands, large banners, vehicle wraps and many others. After the lunch and the presentation, everyone was invited to take a tour of the facility.

Stan Miller announced that quarterly bills for Rotary dues for the fourth quarter (October, November, December) are a couple of weeks late. Watch for them in the next week.

He said they are hoping to be invited to join the MountainWest Conference. The coach enjoys a superb reputation for his winning record.

Today's luncheon meeting was held at Riverside Country Club. President Steve Densley conducted with Ron Roberts at the piano and Steve Tolley leading the crowd in singing the Anthem and reciting the Pledge. An invocation was offered by Steve Tolley.

Guests included Arthur Newell, senior vice-president of American West Bank and Seth Wright, both guests of Steve Densley.

Birthdays were celebrated for November Rotarians Jeff Alexander, Stan Miller, Kirk Parkinson and Strat Wendelboe.

Don Jarvis announced the the club's board has approved a $1,000 charitable matching grant for Provo's Centro Hispano organization to be used for shoes for needy children this holiday season. Anyone wishing to conribute may contact Stan Miller for a pledge to be added to the regular quarterly Rotary bill.

President Steve Densley announced that the club has approved a charitable gift of $600 to Heritage School for their annual fund-raising gala.

The Provo Rotary Charitable Foundation recently donated sixty winter coats to the Provo School District for distribution to needy children. There was an article in the Daily Herald showing a distribution at Westridge School.

With the upcoming holiday season, President Steve Densley announced that there will be no regular club luncheon on Thursday, November 24 (Thanksgiving Day), December 15 (Annual Christmas party that night at Riverside Country Club), or the two Thursdays during the Christmas holiday season, December 22 and December 29. Please mark your calendar.

Following the unanimous recommendation of the the club's past-presidents committee, President Steve Densley announced that the club's board has authorized a change to the bylaws permitting members to be eligibile for election to the club's board of directors after three years of membership rather than five. Those in attendance at today's meeting unanimously ratified this action.

Ricky Hood served as sergeant getting much laughter and raising a few dollars for the club's charitable foundation.

Jeff Alexander introduced today's speaker, Coach Dave Rose of the BYU basketball program. Coach has held this position since April 2005 and has since recorded the most successful record in BYU's history. The coach showed clips from a soon-to-be-released documentary of the school's 2010-2011 basketball season, the most successful in the university's history with thirty-two wins. The documentary can be ordered for $19.99 at the website www.byutickets.com. It is a combination DVD/Blu-ray disc set.

Steve Sabins reported that the past-presidents of the Provo Rotary Club met last Tuesday and selected new officers: Rick Hood will serve as club president 2014-2015. New directors who will serve for two years beginning next July are: Jill Moon, Pete Pletsch and Les Smith. Congratulations to the new club leaders.

Paul Warner introduced today's guest speaker, US Senator Orrin Hatch who has served in the Senate for thirty-five years representing Utah. He took questions from the group and spoke about several issues.

The BCS (Bowl Championship Series) in college football is one of the most corrupt organizations in the US.

BYU Coach Dave Rose is doing a great job with his basketball program.

Senator Hatch was instrumental in getting LDS Apostle Elder Dallin Oaks to testify before Congress a couple of weeks ago regarding taxation issues.

He opposed to a plan being floated by Arizona to charge a toll for those traveling on the 29-miles of I-15 between Southern Utah and Nevada to raise funds for highway mainenance.

He is in favor of uranium mining in an area near the Utah-Arizona border to make the US self-sufficient in this vital mineral which is now being imported.

When asked about the three most important issues regarding debt reduction in the US, he placed them in this order:

FIRST: Reduce the size of government by passing a balanced-budget amendment to the US Constitution. He has introduced such legislation thirteen times.

SECOND: Reform labor laws.

THIRD: Remove several large government departments including the EPA and the Department of Education.

Saving Hill Air Force Base is one of his ongoing struggles.

The National Security Agency's new $2 billion spy center at Camp Williams will be the most important security system in the world. The location was chosen primarily because of the high quality of college graduates in Utah.

70% of the land in Utah is owned by the US Government contributing to a low tax base for the state.

He mentioned the Congressional super-committee on debt reduction.

Spending for Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and the budget for the Department of Defense comprise 60% of the national budget. Currently 25% of the US population is on either Medicare or Medicaid. The aging population is living longer because of access to better food and medical care. Medicare and Social Security reform will become more urgent in the near future. He mentioned several reform options.

President Obama's jobs bill was designed to fail so he could blame Congress. Even most Democrats oppose it. It was defeated in the US Senate 97-0.

Many states are in debt. The total of all state indebtedness is around $118 billion. The US Government cannot afford to bail them out.

US citizens paying NO federal income taxes has increased from 42% to 51% since President Obama took office. These will be his largest voter base for the next election.

Every US citizen should contribute something to support the federal government, even if it's only $1 each.

The upcoming presidential election is the most important in history. There is only one candidate who can defeat President Obama: Mitt Romney. It will be very difficult.

Awards were also made to Andy Anderson as a gift to the Boys and Girls Club for their annual fund-raising event, and to Dr. Ron Pugh to support his annual humanitarian efforts in Mexico.

Birthdays were celebrated for those having birthdays in October: Carl Berg, Curt Bramble, Steve Covey, Bruce Gilchrist, Vaughn Park, and Les Smith.

Guests: Steve Densley introduced his guest Ashley Picard with Girl Scouts of Utah, Greg Hudnall introduced the Provo School District cabinet who attended to hear today's speaker, Stan Miller introduced Matt Jesperson representing the Courtyard at Jamestown.

President Steve Densley announced that the club's board has approved three charitable donations: $1,000 to Dr. Ron Pugh for his annual humanitarian trip, $1,000 to the Utah National Parks Council of the Boy Scouts of America for their annual charity dinner and auction, and $500 to the Boys and Girls Club of Utay Valley to support their annual charity dinner and auction.

President Steve Densley also announced that the club has purchased sixty coats for distribution through the Provo School District to chilcren without warm coats.

Paul Warner introduced Greg Hudnall, Director of Student Services for the Provo School District, who introduced today's speaker, Dr. Randy Merrill, superintendent of the Provo School District. He gave a demographic overview of the status of the school district and the success and challenges we face here:

There are currently 13,800 students enrolled in Provo City public schools.

Canyon Crest and Westridge schools were recently named in the top 10 public elementary schools in Utah.

There are 675 teachers.

Provo is the only district in Utah with a certified music teacher in every public school. The district owns nearly 900 musical instruments.

The district served over 1.3 million lunches last school year plus 800,000 breakfast meals.

There are over 212,000 books in the school lending libraries in addition to thousands of textbooks.

The district owns and maintains over 1.9 million square feet of building space.

The district owns more than 7,000 computers and 1,400 iPads.

275 students are enrolled in dual immersion programs in three elementary schools in the languages of Spanish, Chinese and French.

85 gifted (noted as "severely gifted") students are enrolled in advanced learning programs at Grandview School.

Provo area high schools have won many state football and basketball championships.

300 students are taking online classes.

The district isn't growing much with only 400 or so new students being added this year. The student population is 65% caucasion, 27% Hispanic with the remainder composed of Asians, Pacific Islanders and many other ethnic groups.

Almost 50% of the students come from homes classified as low income or poverty.

The district is planning for the future with it's 20/20 Iniative.

Guests included Matt Siufanua, guest of Provo City Police Chief Rick Gregory; Matt Holley of the Provo School District, guest of Greg Hudnall, and JeriLin Bearnson, guest of David Rogers. Also visiting were Aaron Mitchell, president of the BYU Rotaract Club and Blake Romney from Provo Channel 17 who tapes and airs our weekly programs.

Greg Hudnall served as sergeant for the day with his usual robust wit raising a few dollars for the club's charitable foundation.

Ben Guffey introduced today's speaker, Blaine Yates, CEO of XLEAR, Inc., an Orem company which markets products with a natural sweetener called Xylitol. This product, derived from the bark of birch trees, was discovered in the 1890s. It was found to have a chemical component which helps prevent tooth decay by as much as 80% in children. It has a VERY LOW glycemic index which makes it a good sweetener for those with diabetes.

Xlear markets several products with Xylitol including nasal spray, chewing gum, Xylo Sweet sugar substitute, candy and a line of dental products including a whitening kit.

They are building a new 90,000 square foot headquarters building near I-15 in American Fork but for the time being they continue to manufacture out of their facilities in Orem.

Xlear products are widely available in health food stores and through dental supply companies. They have more than 100 employees.

Report of the Weekly Luncheon Meeting held September 22, 2011

Guests: Quint Bates visited the club as a former Rotarian from Denver. Ben Swank, a BYU student, attended as a guest of Steve Royster.

Leslie Gledhill is still struggling with recovery from surgery.

Andy Anderson served as sergeant and raised a few dollars for our club's charitable foundation and got quite a few laughs.

Scott Miller introduced today's speaker, Bill Hulterstrom, CEO of United Way of Utah Valley for twenty-seven years. He spoke mostly about demographic trends in the Valley with 70% of the recent growth coming from home -- there were more than 15,000 new babies born in Utah Valley in 2010.

The average in Utah is 28, average age in Utah County is 23.2. Of approximately 600,000 residents in the Valley, 190,000 are children.

Third-grade reading skills are statistic predictors of success in many categories and those reading skills are declining. This is an alarming trend. The solution lies in adult (parental) involvement with youth.

More than 11.8% of the Valley's population lives below poverty income levels (under $22,000 per year) with Native Americans and Pacific Islanders having the highest rates of poverty. Utah County and Salt Lake County are very similar demographically.

Report of the Weekly Luncheon Meeting held September 8, 2011

Guests: Dr. Vaughn Park introduced his new veterinary associate Dr. Tara Erickson. Robert Redd introduced his wife Mary Allen. Victoria Garrow, UVU Director of Development, was visiting.

Dean Jackson announced an interfaith memorial service to be held this Sunday evening, September 11, 2011, at the Seventh Day Adventist church. Mayor John Curtis will MC the event. The speaker will be UVU President Matt Holland.

Ricky Hood reminded everyone that there will be no regular luncheon meeting next week, Thursday, September 15, because of the club's annual golf party at Wasatch Mountain State Park. Even if you don't golf, everyone is invited to the 5:30 barbecue at the Cottonwood Pavilion of the Wasatch Mountain State Park campground.

Lee Gallagher's husband has been ill. Vic Ludlow's mother passed away this week.

Ricky Hood served as sergeant for the day.

Ray Beckham introduced today's speaker, fellow Provo Rotarian and Provo Mayor John Curtis who has been mayor now for nearly two years. The mayor refers to Provo as a "Great City." He mentioned he had a number of items about which he wished to comment, but when the ending time came 35-minutes later he said: "Holy Cow, I barely got started!" He commented about:

Public Works Director Merrill Bingham.

Provo's fiber optic network which he calls a "successful failure." After selling it twice to companies who could not make it operate profitably, the city is taking it back and assuming the $32 million balance on the bonds.

The formation of a new Customer Service Initiative (CSI) which will take over the empty lobby of the city center. Most city departments are closed on Fridays but this one will be open Fridays to help with any city business.

Rebranding of Provo's logo and changing the way the city does business.

The status of the Provo Tabernacle which burned in a fire nearly a year ago. The LDS Church has been exhaustive in its research of the building's contents which were destroyed and has purchased some surrounding property, but has not yet announced plans for demolition or restoration.

The recycling "opt-out" program. Currently only about 25% of Provo households have recycling containers. This program will bring that number to around 65-70%.

Ground was recently broken for the new Provo Recreation Center and community gathering place. It will open in March 2013.

The Provo Police Department was experiencing low morale and has had some bad publicity in the past year or two, but after a lengthy nationwide search has recently hired Rick Gregory as Provo's new police chief. Chief Gregory is "outstanding." Incidentally, Chief Gregory joined the Provo Rotary Club last week.

Today's luncheon meeting was held at Riverside Country Club -- the first meeting since Riverside opened its new clubhouse. President Steve Densley conducted with Ron Roberts at the piano and Jill Moon leading the crowd in singing the Anthem and reciting the Pledge.

Ben Guffey introduced the speaker Illens Dort, founder of a charity called International Aid Serving Kids. He commented that humanitarian service is uplifting to communities around the world and bless all mankind. He showed a video of a medical/dental humanitarian service project in he Dominican Republic in which 1,774 patients were treated in four days.

Today's luncheon meeting was held at the the Provo Downtown Marriott Hotel. President Steve Densley conducted with Ron Roberts at the piano and Jill Moon leading the crowd in singing the Anthem and reciting the Pledge. Ron Pughoffered an invocation.

Guests: Phil Barker introduced his guest, former Provo Rotarian Joey Hansen. Steve Royster introduced his guest Ray Chipman from Squire and Company. Also present was Matthew Newell, guest of today's speaker.

Linda Palmer, chair of last June's annual Rotary Festival Classic golf tournament, presented checks to Glen Zaugg of Heritage Schools for $3,451 and to Steve Royster of the Utah National Parks Council of the Boy Scouts of America for $436.

Tom Powell indicated that he is helping sponsor a Hispanic Rotary Club in Utah Valley. If you know of a Spanish speaking person who might be interested in joining, please contact Tom.

Rick Hood spoke about the upcoming annual club golf party at Wasatch Mountain State Park on Thursday, September 15, 2011. This is a good opportunity bring a business associate who might have interest in joining Rotary.

Phil Barker introduced today's speaker, Roger Conners, a three-time best-selling author of The Oz Principle. He spoke about his consulting company "Partners in Leadership" and the importance of creating clarity about expectations among business associates.

President Steve Densley reported on a visit to the newly completed Riverside Country Club clubhouse which will open soon. The space available for Rotary is upstairs in an undersized area. After discussion the club voted to meet there for a few weeks beginning September 1 and see how it feels.

Today's luncheon meeting was held at the Clark Auditorium of Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. President Steve Densley conducted with Ron Roberts at the piano and Jill Moon leading the crowd in singing the Anthem and reciting the Pledge. Craig Carlile offered an invocation.

Guests included Jane Carlile, chairman of the board of the Urban South Region of Intermountain Healthcare and wife of our own Craig Carlile. Dean Jackson had his friend and former Rotarian Rick Gregory, Provo's new Chief of Police. Linda Pemberton introduced Jeff Moss, one of her colleagues at Key Bank. Also visiting was Joey Hansen.

August birthdays were celebrated for Wayne Beesley, Rick Hood, Greg Hudnall, Jeff Mathews, Ruth Riley, David Rogers, Steve Royster and President Cecil O. Samuelson.

President Steve Densley reported that the annual summer barbecue held last week at Hobble Creek Canyon was great fun enjoyed by more than fifty of us. Sometime get Dale Jackson to tell you about his scar.

Leslie Gledhill is undergoing her third ankle surgery. Get well soon, Leslie!

Julie Bolton accepted a check from Linda Palmer for more than $9,000 for Canary Gardens from the Provo Rotary Charitable Foundation. It represents proceeds of the recent Rotary Festival Classic golf tournament.

Phil Barker was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship. Congratulations Phil!

The annual club golf party at Wasatch Mountain State Park will be held Thursday, September 15. Sign-up sheets are available at club luncheons.

Joey Hansen, a former member of the Provo Rotary Club, introduced the speaker, Steve Smoot, also a former member of the Provo Rotary Club and Hospital Administrator of the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. Steve spoke about his ancestor, Abraham O Smoot, whose home became Utah County's first hospital in the late 1800s. The first full-service hospital in Utah Valley was opened in 1939 by the LDS Church with 55 beds and 12 basinettes. It was expanded in 1950 and then given to Intermountain Healthcare in the mid-1970s with a charge to become a model for health care. It has done so.

Steve gave the following items of interest:

*Health care is heading into crisis.

*Utah has the lowest health insurance premiums in the US.

*Intermountain Healthcare is a pioneer in electronic systems for health care.

*Utah Valley Regional Medical Center has recently partnered with Primary Children's Medical Center to provide improved pediatric care for Utah Valley children.

*Utah Valley Regional Medical Center is a level 2 trauma center with average waiting times down from 43-minutes to 20-minutes -- a national best standard.

*Utah Valley Regional Medical Center is among the top 1% in the US in treating heart disease and strokes.

*Concierge room service has recently been introduced with all patients being able to order their food from a menu. This has resulted in a significant reduction in food waste.

*Intermountain Healthcare helps with volunteer care clinics for low-income families in partnership with the United Way, LDS Church, BYU and Utah County's Mountainlands clinics.

At the conclusion of the meeting the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship was awarded to the speaker in appreciation for the partnership Provo Rotary has enjoyed with UVRMC.

Andy Anderson is recovering from pneumonia and was present at the meeting. Dwight Flickinger is not doing better and isn't expected to live much longer. Our best wishes go to Lorna and his family.

Ray Beckham introduced today's speaker, Roger Thomas, Provo's Director of Parks and Recreation since 1996. He oversees Provo's 45 parks, East Bay municipal golf course, Provo City cemetery and over 21 miles of trails. He spoke about a number of improvement projects underway in the city now:

Lakeview Park on the city's west side is now under construction with neighborhood help.
The North University Greenway is under construction from 3700 North to 4800 North along University Avenue. Our own club's Dan Ellertson has been involved in guiding this $1 million project.
Riverview Park (near the Vintage neighborhood) is getting a new stream bed and water
Lions Park is getting a new walking path with the help of neighbors and several Eagle Scout projects.
Peaks Ice Arena has a new indoor soccer and football field with new turf.
Pioneer Park (Center Street and 500 West) is getting a new water feature with a synchronized fountain to replace the old irrigation ditch that was popular with children for swimming.
Lakeshore Trail Head (new) near the lake on Lakeshore Drive is getting three new miles of trails with 24/7 security.
Provo City Cemetery is getting full. Six acres is being added which will provide enough new burial plots for the next 35-40 years.
Foothill Park is being builg on the old Seven Peaks golf course and will include pavilions, trails and spectacular views.
In the future two new projects will be built: Spring Creek Park and a sports facility on North Canyon Road.

The most exciting new project is the Provo Recreation Center which will begin construction in late 2011 with an expected 18-month building schedule opening in the spring of 2013. It will be located adjacent to the existing Veteran's pool and water park at 500 North and 500 West. A bond election passed last autumn with overwhelming voter approval of more than 60%. Design work has been underway for the past several months. It will include pools, a skate park, outdoor tennis courts, a senior center and community meeting space, aquatics features and much more.

Crandall awarded highest Rotary honor

Louis Crandall may be an Arizona boy by birth, but on Thursday he was all Provo as the Provo Rotary Club awarded him the Service Above Self award, the highest honor bestowed by Rotary International.

Developer and friend DeLynn Heaps recalled the first time he met Crandall.
"It was 1963 and Louis was building a theme park in Arizona similar to Disneyland," Heaps said. Heaps visited the theme park known as "Legend City" in Arizona to try and sell Crandall on some sky ride he was involved with. They became instant friends. Later Heaps got a call from Crandall.

"I want to come to Provo," Crandall said. "I want to come and take over Seven Peaks."
Seven Peaks Ski Resort had been a dream for many years of several developers. While it never came to fruition, Crandall got the job, moved to Provo, and changed the dream ski resort's name to Four Seasons. He even annexed the top peak of the mountain into the city limits making it the highest city in the nation, according to Crandall.

Heaps and Crandall went on to be involved in several other business ventures including the University Mall. In a moment of jest, Heaps said, "everything he got me into cost me money, and we're still friends."

In the years since, Crandall has built or helped others build several business and community ventures. One of his nearest and dearest projects has been the Boys and Girls Club.
Tony Thomas was one of the first 50 boys to join the club in 1972. Today there are more than 2,500 youth involved with the club.

"He always introduces me as his best friend," Thomas said. "It took real vision to build the new facility. Everything I've seen Lou do over the past 30 years has been for others."

To keep himself and his family fed, Crandall started an advertising agency, which carried some notable clients including the original Osmond Brothers and KLM Airlines. Ron Clark, former Osmond manager, worked extensively with Crandall over the years.

"Advertising runs in the man's veins. He is a consummate professional. He designed our concert books, pamphlets and fliers. These are now collectables," Clark said. "In the early 70s he helped the Osmond family and their new studio. It's never been a burden or a bother to be associated with Lou Crandall. I love Louis Crandall."

During those early days in Provo, Crandall also was called upon to head up the design committee for the new city center complex. Harold Anderson, also a committee member, said that Crandall worked hard to keep downtown Provo right.

"He showed sensitivity to the needs of Provo," Anderson said. Paraphrasing John F. Kennedy, Anderson said, "Crandall's attitude was not see what your community can do for you, but see what you can do for your community."

For the past 15 years Crandall's life has been devoted to the Crandall Historical Printing Museum. Museum Board Chair Dann Hone spoke of the work Crandall had put into the museum at 275 E. Center St.

"Fifteen years ago Lou and first wife Mabel thought of putting together a printing museum. It is now the world's most authentic printing museum," Hone said. "Many will never know all the things he has been involved in, without any fanfare but merely out of the pure love of service."

Hone added that Crandall's vision will carry on. "The museum is going ahead. It's going to do expansions and make this a place different than all the world," Hone said.

Speaking for the children and grandchildren, Crandall's daughter, Mary Louise "Mem" Bryan said, "Dad was a great example and wanted us kids to be happy. He wanted us to look forward to things, like trips to Disneyland. He would sing songs and make us laugh."
Bryan recalls when Crandall was building Legend City, the family traveled to many amusement parks to see what they had to offer. Legend City was based on the Old West of the 1880s.

"He taught us to love our community. He is also a wonderful grandpa. I am proud to call Louis Crandall my dad," Bryan said.

Crandall says he was taken back by all the praise. "I didn't plan a response to this wonderful honor. I can't thank Rotary Club enough for this wonderful honor. It's been a privilege to serve Provo," he said.

Crandall's long list of service to the community was written on the plaque that he called "the most beautiful plaque I've every seen, and I'm an artist."

Lou's current wife, Marie, was tearing as she said, "I think this is exceptionally wonderful. I didn't know a lot of this when I married him, but it's getting better all the time. It's my privilege to be with Lou."

The gavel was given to Steve Sabins, outgoing past-president, who extended an honorable release to outgoing club president Steve Tolley for outstanding service as club president since July 1, 2010.

Steve Tolley then presented an eloquent report of the many wonderful accomplishments our club has made during the past year and thanked all for helping make it a remarkable experience for him. His wife Tamara even made one extra quilt for charity which was purchased by Andy Anderson.

Next week's Rotary luncheon will be held Monday, June 20 at Riverside Country Club in conjunction with the club's annual charity fundraiser, the Rotary Festival Classic. All members are invited to lunch at 12:30 and to stay for the auction following.

The following Thursday evening, June 23, will be the annual Boys Night at the Orem Owlz Ballpark. All Provo Rotarians and a guest are invited to the hamburger/hot dog barbecue and ball game. Extra guests will be charged $15 each.

Andy Anderson served as sergeant inviting everyone to get involved with helping with the golf tournament next Thursday.

It was announced that Ben Guffey's wife had a baby boy early this morning. Mother and baby are doing fine.

Guests introduced included Eddie Nunez of AAA who is transfering from the Draper club to the Provo club. High school scholarship recipient from Independence High School, and District Governor-elect Rick Cambria.

Greg Hudnall served as sergeant raising money for the Provo Rotary Charitable Foundation and auctioning the last hand-made quilt from Tamara Tolley which went to Rick Hood.

Stan Miller introduced Wally Brown, past District Governor, who spoke about Shelter Boxes, a unique project started by Rotarians. A shelter box is a large plastic tub with a tight lid which is filled with a large 3-bedroom tent, cooking stove, pots and pans, utensils, a few tools, water purification supplies, blankets, and a variety of other survival items which can take care of a family of 6-8 people in times of disaster. After the earthquake in Haiti the Shelter Box Foundation sent 57,000 shelter boxes providing supplies for 300,000 people.

A donation of $1,000 provides a box, shipping anywhere in the world, and helps support a very small staff of people who run the foundation. For more information long on to:

The annual Zions Bank Spring Art Show will be at Zions Bank this evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. featuring many Utah artists. Two of them have ties to our club: Kirk Parkinson and Jill Moon.

The annual Rotary Festival Classic charity golf tournament will be held in just a month, Monday, June 20, 2011 at Riverside Country Club. Club members are needed to help register and set up at 6:30 a.m. There are still spots to golf if you wish to do so. And all club members are invited to the steak and salmon barbecue at 12:30 p.m. at Riverside Country Club's fairway canopy dining area.

The club's president-elect nominee, Dr. Vaughn Park, will represent us at the annual Rotary International convention in New Orleans next week.

President-elect Steve Densley introduced today's speaker, John Anderson, former chair of the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce and current VP of Equitec Properties. There were over $100,000,000 in commercial property sales in 2007 which dropped sharply in 2009, picked up a little in 2010, and is doing even better this year. However, he said it will be a long time before we reach the 2007 levels again.

The Salt Lake City metro area is in the top-10 in recovery in 2010 in industrial properties with 7.8% vacancies in vacancies. Utah Valley is close behind at 8.3%. However there is still 14% vacancy rate in office space and 11% vacancy rate in retail space.

Utah Valley is one of the top five in tech start-up companies in the US because of three large universities. It is also a favored area for call centers because of the diverse language abilities of many residents who have served worldwide on LDS missions.

Utah Valley's population is currently around 560,000 and is projected to grow to around 720,000 by 2020, mostly in the north and west county areas and in the Provo/Orem core area.

President Steve Tolley was excused as he attended the annual district conference in Cedar City this weekend. Dinner music was provided by Doris Bullock. Jill Moon lead the singing of the anthem and the pledge. An invocation was offered by Stan Miller.

The annual girls night party will be held at BYU in two weeks, Thursday, May 26, 2011 beginning with dinner at the BYU Skyroom at 6:00 p.m. followed by the play "The Diary of Anne Frank" at the Pardoe Theater. Each Rotarian and a guest are invited at no charge.
Additional guests will be $20 each including dinner and the play.

The club's annual fund-raising charity golf tournament, the Rotary Festival Classic, will be held Monday, June 20, 2011 at Riverside Country Club. All club members are invited to play golf with registration at 7:00 a.m. and/or attend the lunch auction at 1:00 p.m.

Steve Sabins reported that last Saturday's torch run, ably directed by Ricky Hood at the UVU track was a success with good food and lots of fun. Thanks to those who participated.

Andy Anderson served as sergeant for the day raising money for the club's charitable foundation.

John Lewis introduced Glen Parker, director of the BYU Aspen Grove Family Camp, who showed photos and spoke glowingly of the camp's origins in the 1920s under the leadership of BYU president Franklin S. Harris. The camp was used only occasionally until the 1960s when, under the leadership of Provo Rotarian Ray Beckham, the BYU family camp was built and opened for business in July 1963. Aspen Grove has now been in operation for 48 seasons and has grown to an average occupancy of 80 families per week. The 80+ camp personnel serve as hosts to thousands of guests each year.

Dean Jackson announced the annual Easter Sunrise Service to be held this year at 7:00 a.m. on Easter Sunday, 8th floor Rock Canyon Room of the beautiful new Zions Bank building at 2nd North and University Avenue in Provo. All are invited at no charge.

The annual district conference is coming up May 12-14 in Cedar City. You may register on the website UtahRotary.org. This is always a fun and educational event.

Rick Hood once again announced the Utah Valley Torch Run coming up Saturday, May 7 at the Hal Wing track at UVU from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Many of our club members will run to raise awareness and money for Rotary's Polio Plus campaign. There will be free hot dogs and hamburgers for everyone.

Jeff Alexander served as sergeant asking trivia about Provo Rotarians.

Ruth Riley introduced the speaker, Christopher Lindsay, representing the Clear Horizons Academy school for children with autism. He told us autism is rising dramatically all around the world with children who exhibit symptoms such as "living in their own world" and are resistant to change. They develop lifelong developmental disabilities in the areas of communication, social skills and some physical issues. Most autistic children can be helped with early and appropriate intervention.

There was once thought to be a link between certain childhood vaccines and autism, but that theory has since been disproven.

Utah has the third-highest rate of autism in the US, but autistic persons in Utah are higher-functioning than those in any other state. Resources are becoming rapidly available to assist parents of autistic children. Autism is a disorder, not a disease.

Report of Club Luncheon Meeting April 14, 2011

President Steve Tolley announced that matching funds are still available for those who wish to become Paul Harris Fellows or who wish to pay for a fellowship in the name of someone else.

Don Jarvis announced a new award that our club will be awarding periodically: The Service Above Self award. A simple one-page application is available at club meetings.

Steve Tolley introduced today's speaker, Dan Strobell, from the St. George Rotary Club. Their club is involved in an ongoing service project in Guatemala to build concrete block cooking stoves in the homes of impoverished families in the Guatemalan highlands.

He explained that for generations women in many villages spend most of every day gathering firewood and water. They spend so much energy just to survive that their families have lived in poverty for generations. Most villages have no electricitiy. They cook over an open fire inside their small mud or wood homes. 900,000 women and 587,000 children die each year from smoke inhalation. Many children fall into the fire and are seriously burned.

By building a square concrete block cooking stove in the middle of the home, where there was typically an open fire, the wood burns more efficiently, a stovepipe takes the smoke out of the home, and the interior air of the home is cleaner and more healthful.

The St. George club and their affiliated Rotary clubs in Guatemala will build around 200 such stoves this year. The cost for materials is around $130 per stove. The money is provided by a grant from the Utah Rotary district and from individual donations. At the conclusion of the presentation our club awarded a check for $3,000 which will pay for materials for more than twenty stoves.

First we viewed a lovely movie showing Gary's love for the outdoors and for wildlife which began when he served an LDS mission in the Jackson Hole area of Wyoming. He then spoke about his sculptures and how he creates them from beginning to end, even doing his own bronze foundry work. He also paints water colors. The largest sculpture he ever made was a 17-foot tall moose which stands at the entry to the Wolf Hollow development in Wasatch County.

Report of Club Luncheon Meeting March 31, 2011

The meeting was conducted by club president Steve Tolley. Dinner music was provided by Ron Roberts. The Anthem and Pledge were led by Jill Moon. Ethan Shumway offered an invocation.

Two visiting Rotarians introduced themselves: Craig and Cheri Battrick from Bethany, Missouri and Eric Graham from Gary, Indiana.

President Steve Tolley reminded members of the upcoming district conference in May in Cedar City and the annual Rotary International conference in late June in New Orleans. He also mentioned that Rotary International president Ray Klinginsmith will be in Utah May 5 speaking at Rotary club in Sandy.

Ricky Hood reminded everyone about the Torch Run for Polio Saturday morning, May 7 at the UVU track. Our club has committed to run ten miles (40 laps). This is a family event which will include hamburger and hot dog barbecue for everyone.

President Steve Tolley presented his monthly "Ties that Bind" award (a tie) to Frank Gardner who has been a member of our club since 1954.

David Rogers served as sergeant.

Craig Carlile introduced today's speaker, his wife Jane Carlile, who spoke about the "Circles Initiative", a federally-funded program to help lift low-income people out of poverty. There are currently around 68,000 people in Utah County whose annual household income is below the poverty level. This program is being held at Provo's low-income housing project called The Boulders. Select residents are invited to attend a course of fifteen weekly meetings (with a meal served at each) to learn nutrition, life and other skills and are then linked with a mentor. Eighty-eight percent of those who have completed the classes report an inrease of income. Volunteers of all skills are needed to serve as mentors.

Rick Hood has accepted the assignment to be chair of the upcoming district Rotary "Torch Run" to be held Saturday morning, May 7, 2011 at the new track field at UVU. The club has committed to provide ten runners to run (or walk) during the run which is a fund-raising event for Polio Plus. Besides a lot of fun, our club has been asked to bring our canteen wagon and provide hamburgers and hot dogs. Mark your calendar and bring the family.

David Rogers announced that the Great West Conference basketball tournament is being held this week at Utah Valley University. Andy Anderson has free tickets. UVU, with a season record of 11-1, is the #1 seed in tournament play.

Tom Powell introduced speaker Ronnie Daniels, development director for the Living Planet Aquarium in Sandy. A majority of those in attendance indicated they have visited the aquarium.

It was started by Brent Anderson in 1998. It moved to its present location in Sandy (700 East and 10600 South) in 2004 and has had 1.6 million visitors. There were 392,000 visitors in 2010 alone.

With a $2.5 million gift secured they plan to begin construction of a new aquarium this autumn on I-15 in Draper. The virtual tour makes it look like it will be a spectacular facility.

The aquarium employes between 53 and 65 employees with another 120 volunteers who work four hours per week. There are eighteen full-time educators who visit every Utah elementary school every year with their education outreach program.

March birthdays were celebrated for: Andy Anderson, Frank Gardner, Mike Jacobsen, Vic Ludlow, Steve Smith and Gary Wiest.

President Steve Tolley announced a new drive to invite all Provo Rotarians to become Paul Harris Fellows. Currently there are a dozen or so, mostly new members, who have not yet reached this designation. Using matching funds made available in part by a grant from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, those not currently PHF may do so by contributing only $250 to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International which will be matched to a total of $1,000.

The St. George Rotary Club is sponsoring a humanitarian trip to Guatemala in May. There are a few spaces available for anyone who may wish to go.

President Steve Tolley announced a drive to collect paper-back books for distribution to those in need. March is literacy awareness month. Please bring used soft-bound books to the regular Rotary luncheon meeting on March 17.

Greg Hudnall served as sergeant asking trivia about the homeless population in our area. He was joined by Andy Anderson in auctioning a hand-made quilt donated by Tamara Tolley which was purchased for $100 by David Rogers.

Craig Carlile introduced today's speaker, Brent Crane, an interesting and articulate spokesman for Provo's Food and Care Coalition, who spoke about his organization's mission to feed and house the homeless and provide medical and dental services. He recommended three movies: The Soloist starring Robert Downey Jr.; A Beautiful Mind, and Pursuit of Happyness starring Will and Jaden Smith. Among the points he made are:

50% of Utah Valley's homeless are mentally challenged.

Everyone seemingly recognizes the need for homeless shelters, but nobody wants it next door.

Provo's Food and Care coalition operates a lovely new 36,000 square foot facility (built entirely with privately donated funds) with six employees and more than 50,000 volunteer hours donated each year. The facility feeds 100,000 free meals per year with one full-time cook.

More than 3,200 independent requests for housing were received in 2010.

The LDS Church recently donated $341,000 to complete and furnish the 38 private housing rooms in the facility.

They can't choose their clients, but they can choose how to treat them.

Local dentists, chiropractors, Utah Valley Hospital, Utah Valley radiology, and others donate services weekly to treat the homeless.

There are four critical needs:

People are needed to open doors to potential donors.
An additional $250,000 is needed to finish the housing units.
They are in need of six sets of washers and dryers.
They are registered at Bed, Bath and Beyond for items needed to operate the facilities.

Tom Powell introduced today's speaker, Dennis Hall, long-time operator of McDonalds restaurants in Provo, who spoke enthusiastically about McDonalds as a business and community member. He began as a corporate manager at company headquarters near Chicago. His first restaurant was located at 512 N 900 East in Provo (no longer there). He operated that for twenty years while building other restaurants on 1230 North, in East Bay and in north Springville. There are now over 14,000 McDonalds restaurants in the US. It is the largest and most recognized restaurant chain in the world.

Among the other interesting things he mentioned are:

Ronald McDonald is the CEO of Happiness

McDonalds supports many charities in every city in which they operate

McDonalds started the Redbox DVD rental empire and operated it only at McDonalds restaurants for many years. It was sold a few years ago.

The Provo restaurant on 1230 North had the largest Redbox business in the US.

McDonalds is dedicated to food safety and nutrition. Their hamburgers are 100% beef.

McDonalds was the first restaurant chain to disclose nutritional information for all of its food products.

Fresh fruit smoothies, one of the newest food offerings, are selling in Utah at 117% of the national average.

The McDonalds on 1230 North was the second McDonalds restaurant in the world to offer a "playplace."

McDonalds trains and employs more women and minorities than any other business in the US.

Paul Warner welcomed his guest John Hardy who will be assisting the Freedom Festival with the annual Rotary Festival Classic golf tournament scheduled for June 20, 2011.

While he was standing Paul Warner also announced a Freedom Festival movie night February 16, 2011 at the SCERA. A PBS movie on John and Abigail Adams will be shown free to the public.

David Rogers announced a need for team hosts March 9-12, 2011 for a basketball invitation at UVU.

Tom Powell introduced speakers Joan Dixon and Teresa Tavares of Centro Hispano, a non-profit organization in Provo dedicated to the mission to orient and mentor members of the Hispanic community in order for them to gain access to needed resources that will strengthen their families and their contributions to the community. They spoke with passion and enthusiasm about their outreach program, showed a Power Point program and answered questions. The program offers education classes, low-income tax help and health education for members of Utah Valley's Hispanic community.

President Steve Tolley announced the annual Provo Rotary Charity Golf Tournament, called the Rotary Festival Classic which will be held Monday, June 20, 2010 at Riverside Country Club. This is the club's annual fund-raising event for charity. The lunch that day will replace the regular Thursday lunch for that week. Please put this on your calendar and think of a business who can help sponsor this event.

Stan Miller introduced a new member of our club, Ethan Shumway, community relations director for the Urban South Region of Intermountain Healthcare. Ethan is filling the spot previously held by Bryant Larsen who has been transferred by Intermountain to a new position at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. Welcome Ethan!

Rotary District 5420 (Utah) is sponsoring a "Torch Run" in late April or early May to help raise funds to continue the effort to eradicate polio. More later.

Tom Powell introduced speaker Burke Hoffman and Trevor Hansen of Metech Recycling. This company specializes in recycling electronic equipment which would otherwise end up in landfills. Last year they recycled around 50,000 tons of electronic waste. Forty percent of lead in US landfills comes from discarded CRT monitors. Around 65 million PC computers become obsolete in the US each year. Many businesses contract with Metech to recyle their old electronics. RC Willey will receive an old TV when a new one is sold and recylcle the old one through Metech. It is illegal for a business to dispose of electronics in the garbage.

Don Jarvis introduced today's speaker, Dr. Ned Hill, a retired BYU professor and former dean of the Marriott School of Business, who chaired a committee which developed guidelines for development and preservation of Provo's natural resource treasures for the coming twenty years through the year 2030. It gives long-term vision for protecting the environment we value in and around Provo. He gave some general information about what this committee has done and directed those interested to view details by Googling Provo Vision 2030. He fielded questions from the group about several topics among which were development of the lake, a bridge across the lake and expansion of the Provo airport.

President Steve Tolley reported on the annual all-clubs dinner held last Saturday evening at the University of Utah celebrating 100 years of Rotary in Utah. Wilt Chamberlain and Mark Eaton spoke.

President Steve Tolley reported on a recent news release from Don Jarvis and Steve Densley which resulted in a front-page article in the Daily herald about the Provo Rotary Club and our efforts to eradicate polio from the earth and raise awareness of this crippling disease.

Greg Hudnall welcomed Paul Warner as the newest member of the Provo Rotary Club. Paul is a retired professor at BYU, former Provo City councilman, and is currently serving as Executive Director of America's Freedom Festival.

Stan Miller introduced Tom Dickson, founder of Blendtec and inventor of a succession of blenders and mixers for home and commercial use. In the past few years he has become something of a television and YouTube celebrity with his crazy uses of blenders under the moniker, "Will It Blend?" After spending a while telling stories of some of his inventions and experiences on Good Morning America, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and numerous others, he demonstrated the strength of one of his mixers by blending up a rake handle before a fascinated audience of Rotarians. At the end he offered all Rotarians and friends a 50% discount on his most famous signature model blender with two bowls. Simply mention the Provo Rotary Club at the factory store just west of UVU.
